Exploring the Unique Challenges Facing Today’s Young Adults: Insights and Solutions for a New Generation

Suspension of disbelief?
It seems to me almost everything we entertain ourselves with is no longer grounded in reality. And this concerns me because we are actively training our brains to suspend our disbelief over and over again until we are numb to it. Till everything is treated with this kind of dissociated approach. Think about it. If every day you bombard yourself with things that are not grounded in logic…

The problem with expectations
It is this realization, this simple truth, that accounts for so much of the daily strife we are emotionally confronted with. Barring significant negative events in your life (and nowadays even that is subjective), people are keyed up all the time now. And this is largely because of technology (try reading another of my blogs about this). We are bombarded with information, marketing, sounds, images, ideas; all to try and sway us to think or feel a certain way. This has also created so many unrealistic expectations that constantly get…

What happened to Thanksgiving?
Last week was Thanksgiving. A day to give thanks, be home with family and enjoy a good meal. For most that is. Some gave thanks by showing up to a shelter and feeding the less fortunate. I really respect those folks. Something different about them. They understand what it means to share, to have real gratitude. Have you ever…

Have you ever been called a Loser?
Are you ashamed or bothered if someone calls you a loser? It’s an insult after all. Or is it? Somewhere along the way, losing became a bad thing. So bad that people are emotionally compromised if someone calls them this. There was a song by Beck in the 90’s where the chorus was “I’m a loser baby, so why don’t you kill me?” Losing must be pretty bad if the only other option is death.
When did losing…

Why are there so many pharmaceutical commercials on tv? What is the point?
Last year, the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA) released a study that showed Big Pharma spends more on ads pushing lower benefit drugs than high benefit ones (after reviewing the top 150 prescriptions in 2020). This led to a few journalists in Forbes and other sources to write some stories questioning why we are seeing so many of these commercials now. Vox thinks drug companies are trying to get people to learn the names of the drugs, and then get a more or less vague idea of what they do or at least what type of body part or condition they work on. The general consensus is…

What exactly is “gaslighting?”
I don’t know about you but up until a few years ago, I never really heard the term “gaslighting” being thrown around like it is now. Chalk it up to the internet giving people access to information they didn’t know about or more and more people going to therapy. Either way, gaslighting is nothing new to culture or society. We just didn’t know the word for it. And like all things popular, everyone thinks they are an expert when using it.
So, what is “gaslighting”? It is a type of psychological manipulation that causes…

Explaining your hate for the other side
I recently read in a journal that hate is the product of love and aggression. You love your “in-group” and you have aggression toward your “out-group”. This can be seen in sports between fans of rival teams. They are so committed to “their” team and want it to win that they develop a feeling of aggression or hate against anyone who would deprive “their” team of winning. I have seen people wish injuries on the other teams’ players, fight other fans, make death threats, and hurl…

Does the U.S. economy love or hate you?
When I asked my wife this week what topic I might blog about and suggested something financial, she answered "Who would want to read a blog about financial stuff?" Huh, I thought to myself. What could I write about that might be interesting to read about relating to financial common sense? Challenge accepted...

Boys 2 Men?
What are we doing to the young men of tomorrow?
There is a quote in the movie Jack Reacher: Never Go Back where a street-smart teenage girl is being questioned by a female military police officer. The officer asks her what she does when things get bad for her in public situations and her response is “I just go pick out the alpha guy and give him flack. Strong guys don’t hurt you. The weak guys do that. Strong guys always have little sisters. Or want one? I don’t know why, that’s just how it is.”
In a society currently throwing around the term “toxic masculinity"...

Do you have decision fatigue?
If you are not aware, decision fatigue is a state of mental exhaustion (tired, anxious, stressed) after making too many decisions. It can affect the ability to make the right decision or even lead to procrastination, to “figure it out later”. Now don’t confuse this problem with its close relative, indecisiveness, which is...

HAVE YOU EVER WONDERED IF you ARE ACTUALLY on a team?
I was watching a little football this weekend and as is typical at these games, there were fans all decked out in their team’s gear or better yet, in gear they had made themselves. You know, costume level gear. I am assuming this was an attempt to get on TV or...

Is test anxiety healthy?
I still occasionally have nightmares of showing up to a class unprepared and having to take a test I didn’t study for. Remember that feeling? The sweaty palms, the sense of dread, and the general sense of fear? Yuck. Maybe you went with the classic of just answering c for every question on the scantron. Maybe you just sat there and didn’t even try and answer. Maybe you just guessed at everything. I feel like, given all the tests we take...

What happened to accountability?
I was in a weird headspace the other day and just flipping through channels on my TV. I stopped on CSPAN because some Congressional members were inquiring of this prominent head of a university as to the policies of the University on a particular subject. The reason and or impetus behind these inquires is irrelevant here. No, what struck me was...

Is modern technology Actually helping young adults succeed? Part 1
The purpose of technology is to alleviate problems or provide for a need or desire that may otherwise seem unattainable. Most people would associate technology and its advancement as...

Is modern technology actually helping young adults succeed?Part 2
Previously I took the time to show some ways in which technology is hindering young adults from succeeding. The zenith of that thinking was how much technology is separating us from our humanity. Making everything easier in life strips young adults of the need to...
