What is the strength of body & Mind Combo?

For reasons we are not entirely sure of, people want to disconnect their physical health from their mental health. They treat them as two different things, with different approaches and often different philosophies. Why? Aren’t they both you? Do you really think you can do one without the other? Sadly, the answer is usually yes. And for those who believe this way, we offer each component as a separate entity.

However, we here at Uncommon Sense think differently. We believe the two are inextricably linked. How your life goes (your mental health) is very much tied to your level of exercise (your physical health). For example, no one in the field of strength training gets very far if they cannot be consistent and motivated in their approach. One of the most difficult things people experience when attempting strength training is to get in the gym enough to make the workouts matter, to teach the body that this is the new norm. That commitment takes mental strength, a choice, made daily or weekly to accomplish something big. If they struggle with that aspect of their life (the mental side), it almost always spills over into the physical side. You simply cannot do one without the other.

With that in mind, you don’t need to here. We can attack them both together. By discussing your life, goals, ambitions, challenges, and setbacks while strength training, you can put the emotion of the former into the latter. You can use your time to its maximum efficiency by killing two birds with one stone. A mentally stronger you through physical strength training. What I have found is when people talk about their life while lifting, they forget about the lifting and strain and are instead free to just let their mind focus. The training then flies by and before you know it, your session is over. Additionally, the mix of physical and mental sets the mind free, not unlike how your mind always comes up with new ideas in the shower.

How do we know this works? Experience. Years of employing this approach in graduate school. Lots of students would lift with me to learn to work out, but more importantly, to talk about their research, life, and other struggles. Imagine a gym buddy who asks you insightful questions. That helps you align your life. All while reaping the benefits of a good workout.

Lastly, and I have seen it countless times, working on and developing your mental strength improves your strength training. Too often people go into gyms and just go through the motions. They don’t think about form or improvement or variation. They just let their mind go numb for an hour and then leave. This disconnects the mind from the body. Thanks to technology, there is plenty of time to do that now-a-days. No, we want you to reconnect your mind to your body, to become aware of what it can and cannot do and how you go about doing it. Learn to understand yourself completely by practicing that awareness. This is the key to your best self. Is there anything more valuable to your personal growth?
